Day 5 - 75kms Ride for Heart and Stroke Foundation

They close the main highway in downtown Toronto for this annual event and it's a really special experience to cycle these otherwise inaccessible roads.  I awoke at 5am in order to eat and be there in good time for the 6am start. Enjoyed the ride in great conditions, clear skies and mild breeze. Finished the undulating course in 2hrs 35mins, but I think I could have done quicker if I'd taken some food on board at the right time, the last 15kms were a nasty slog. I had set a target of 3 hours so won't complain anymore about what was a success both personally and philanthropically.
The rest of the day was booked up with a theatre workshop, which I have just returned home from. My thighs have been on fire for most of the day and it goes without saying that I have given the PCP workout a miss for the day. I'm actually icing my knee just now as it was a bit tender going up the stairs from the subway on my way home.
Back onto the half-portions and PCP workouts as soon as that alarm goes off tmw morning.
Bonne nuit mes amis.

  1. Congratulations. Sounds like you lead a very active life! Hope that your knee settles with the ice.

  2. Koustubh - it was pretty tough, but a lot of fun and felt great to cross the finish line!

Conny - the knee, actually now knees, were still tender this morning and I was also exhausted even after I got out of bed, so I have deferred today's workout until the afternoon. Best to listen to the body sometimes.

  3. Crikey - impressive. What sort of bike do you have?

My husband is a keen cyclist and his bike is his main form of transport around town, to work etc.

Is that main highway in Toronto the same one that people skate to work on during winter?

  4. I have a 20 year old road bike, bought it second-hand. Nothing fancy, but gets me to work and back everyday and passed the test on Sunday without a hitch.
I know people skate on the canal in Ottawa, but the only skating on the highway here would be those people who don't change to winter tyres in December.
